The One Metric That Tells You Everything About Your Website's Business Value

There is one number that, if you know it, tells you everything you need to know about whether your website is working. Most businesses do not track it -- which is why they cannot improve it.

There are hundreds of website metrics. Traffic, bounce rate, time on page, scroll depth, click-through rate, pages per session, return visitors, core web vitals scores. Most of them are interesting. Almost none of them are the number that actually matters for a service business.

The number that matters is your enquiry conversion rate from relevant organic traffic.

What This Number Actually Measures

The enquiry conversion rate answers the question: of the people who visit your site and are genuinely relevant prospects -- the ones in your target market, with the problem you solve, at the stage where they are evaluating options -- what percentage actually reach out?

This is not total visitors. Total visitors includes people who will never be your clients: competitors researching you, people who landed on the wrong page, students doing research, existing clients checking something. The relevant question is about the qualified portion of your traffic.

Why It Tells You Everything

This single number is the output of every other factor on your site. If the headline is wrong, it goes down. If the social proof is weak, it goes down. If the conversion friction is high, it goes down. If the site loads slowly, it goes down. If the positioning is too generic to make qualified prospects feel relevant, it goes down.

Conversely, if this number is strong, you know the site is doing its job -- regardless of how it looks, regardless of what any other metric says, regardless of when it was last redesigned.

How to Start Tracking It

Start with a simple three-month calculation. Total enquiries from the website divided by total sessions from channels that are likely to produce relevant traffic (organic search, direct). This is not precise -- but it is far more useful than tracking bounce rate in isolation.

If the number is under 2%, there is almost certainly a significant performance opportunity available.

We calculate this for you as part of a site review and tell you, specifically, what is suppressing it.
