The Positioning Test: What Your Homepage Says About You in Ten Words

Cover your rest of your homepage. Read only your headline. In ten words or fewer, does a stranger understand exactly who you help, what problem you solve, and why you are different? Most headlines fail this test completely.

The headline is the single most important piece of copy on your website. It is the first thing a visitor reads. It determines in about three seconds whether they feel they have arrived in the right place.

And for most service businesses, it is the most overlooked element on the entire site.

The Ten-Word Test

Read only your headline. Ten words. No subtext, no supporting copy.

Does it tell a qualified prospect who you help? Does it name the problem you solve or the outcome you deliver? Does it do anything to differentiate your business from the generic version of your category?

If the answer to any of these is no, you have a positioning problem -- and it is the first thing every visitor to your site encounters.

The Most Common Headline Failures

"We help businesses grow." -- This could be a business coach, an accountant, a marketing agency, or a thousand other things. It positions nothing.

"Digital solutions for modern businesses." -- This says less than the first example.

"Award-winning web design and development." -- This leads with your credential, not the prospect's outcome. The award interests you. The prospect wants to know what changes for their business.

"Grow your revenue with our proven system." -- This is better but still generic. "Proven" is claimed by everyone. "Revenue" is an outcome but it is not specific enough to feel relevant to any particular type of business.

What a Strong Headline Actually Does

A strong headline makes a qualified prospect feel seen. It does this by being specific about who it is for and what it delivers -- and by excluding the people it is not for, which is a feature, not a bug.

"We build custom web systems for professional service businesses that want more clients, not more complexity" does more work than any generic growth claim. It names the audience. It names the outcome. It names the differentiating characteristic.

A prospect who fits this description reads it and thinks: that is me. A prospect who does not fit moves on immediately -- which is exactly the right result.
